Bec's Romanian Star

Last weekend Romania competed at the Eastern Division of the 2009 EuroBowl (the tournament that gives developing korfball nations the opportunity to reach the European Championships 2010) in Slovakia, featuring Bec’s one and only Ionut Lazar (Johnny Laser to most of you).

Having played for many years and now turning a hand to coaching, Ionut played a key part in the Romanian team which was unfortunately weakened by the loss of their 2 strongest girls in the lead-up to the event.

As a result, Romania just failed to qualify in one of the top 3 spots, losing out to Turkey in the 3rd/4th playoff, but they would not have even been in this position if it hadn’t been for Ionut; his experience and korfball know-how really shone through (as did his scoring prowess), and of course, his larger-than-life personality led the team from the front. As his regular coach I was immensely proud to watch him represent his country and play out of his skin – scoring 6 goals in an international match is no mean feat, even at this level.

Of course, now he is back playing korfball in England Ionut will not be allowed to play all that rebound defence or shoot from so far away, so I hope he enjoyed the freedom wearing the Romanian shirt game him. ;-)

Usually Ionut writes match reports which contain as much fiction as fact – this report is true in its entirety. J And how do I know all this? Well, I watched all the EuroBowl Western Division games from the comfort of the IKF jury desk as I was one of the jury members appointed to help run the event. If you want to travel Europe and meet some korfball friends from all over the World whilst contributing to the administration of international tournaments, then this job could be for you – feel free to ask me anything!

I wish all the Bec players participating at the Western Division of the 2009 EuroBowl as much success and I hope that Scotland, Wales and Ireland all achieve their goal of qualifying for the European Championships – there will be Bec supporters aplenty if so.

Jackie Hoare

Bec 3 coach and IKF jury member

A message from  Bec's new Head Coach.

Dear Becsters

I am really proud to become Bec's head coach. Coming back to Bec this season, it has been great to see the whole club thriving and each team being in a position to challenge to win its league, and I hope I will be able to contribute to the positive direction that the Club is going in.

I am excited at the prospect of coaching the first team squad. I really enjoyed the matches I coached for the 1sts last season, and I think the team have a positive attitude and bags of talent. Tom - and the players - have really moved the team on, and deserve huge credit. My job for next season is to help the team take the next step - which means pushing for the league and the cup. But it is just as important to make sure that we all enjoy the journey - with high intensity training, a style of play that allows players to show their flair, athleticism and creativity and a strong team ethic that will allow the team to be greater than the sum of its parts.

I'll be emailing about developments in the next few weeks. We are closing in on a 2nd team coach and squad assistant, I will be looking to bring in expertise in other forms and introducing various other innovations to help give Bec 1 the edge. Watch this space...! I am planning to come to the Croydon and Mitcham tournaments, and hope to catch up with people there.

Bec announces Donald Forrester as their new coach.

It comes with great pleasure that Bec announces their new first team coach as Donald Forrester. After a fantastic season last year coaching Bec 3 to league success and an unprecedented cup run, we are delighted that Donald will make the step up to coach the 1st team for the next season. Donald has been involved with Bec for many years, as a player, a junior coach, as assistant senior coach and now Head coach. He brings masses of enthusiasm, wholehearted loyalty, respect from his players and peers, and an understanding of the game which will bring Bec 1 the success we all know we are capable of achieving.

Bring on the new season...

Bec 3 win Team of the Year

On Saturday Bec attended the EKA korfBALL, which was held this year in the glamorous Norwich Football Stadium. The night was a fantastic event celebrating korfball throughout the country. With over 300 korfers suited and booted the night was an achievement in itself. Great food, an immense montage of photos and videos from the year (lots of Bec thanks to Jackie) was then followed by awards and presentations. In front of the 300, and as a complete shock to the Bec massive, Bec 3 took home the EKA 2009 Club of the year, received by Lauren Jones. It took the night to a whole new level with celebrations heading into the wee hours of the morning. So a big congratulations to Bec 3 for their achievements. Your season of hard work deserved the recognition. You did us all proud.

A message from Donald:

Winning team of the year is a tremendous accolade and everyone who took part in the team deserves congratulations. A great group of players to work with all season. But I think Mark got it right when he said "Club of the Year". Bec 3's achievements this year were the result of strong support from across the club - from a dedicated coaching session for a third team, through to flexibility around selection that allowed Bec 3 to put out strong teams for key cup and league matches and huge club support over the Cup Finals weekend. So while the award is for Bec 3 - I think it should be seen as a recognition for the whole of the Club and the way in which teams and players support one another across every level of the Club. Let's take it on and make every team a contender for Team of the Year next season...

Best wishes

Donald (One chuffed Bec 3 coach)
